Women’s Euro 22 Final

The Women’s Euro 22 Final on Sunday will not be shown on the big screen on The Piazza.

We know this has attracted some negative comments on social media, so thought we should explain the reasons for that decision.

The screen was brought in for one week only to create some excitement in the city centre around the staging of Sail GP on the waterfront.

It was never our intention to use it for live broadcasting which would have incurred considerable extra cost in terms of licensing and staffing. The arrangements were made long before we knew the Lionesses were through to the Euro Final.

But, with the final kicking off at 5pm on Sunday when city centre businesses are all closed, we don’t think the Piazza would have been the right location anyway.

Many people will already have made plans to watch the final at home or in pubs and clubs or at Plymouth Argyle.

It is our job at the Plymouth City Centre Company to support our businesses and, in these difficult times it would have been wrong to do anything that would take customers away from those venues.

Sail GP is a huge international event. It attracts thousands of visitors and provides a huge economic boost to our businesses and raises our profile on the world stage.

We hope that is what people will be celebrating this weekend before watching the Euro Final at a venue of their choice when, hopefully, the Lionesses will triumph.

Have a great weekend everyone.
