A huge new initiative has been revealed to build up to 10,000 new homes as part of an overall vision to transform Plymouth City Centre.
Plymouth City Council has announced a partnership with Homes England to create a “new town in the city” on the back of the huge investment in the city centre’s public spaces.
The plans align with the City Centre Company’s vision for a more diverse city centre with more homes, leisure, new uses for empty buildings and a bigger events programme to maximise the use of the improved public space and attract more visitors and further investment.
Steve Hughes, chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company, said: “This is welcome news for our businesses who are continuing to face the challenges of rising costs and the changing nature of the high street.
“We always said that the modernisation of the city centre and, especially the transformation of Armada Way, would lead to further investment and that is now happening. People can see the ambition and how the city centre is changing. This announcement for more city centre living, including the development of the Civic Centre will lead to a nicer looking and more vibrant city centre as well as creating and safeguarding jobs.”
